The strength behind the tone

Sukkanya is a disciple of ghatam maestro Padmabhushan Sri Vikku Vinayakram.Sukkanya initially began training in the mridangam at the tender age of 12 under the guidance of Sri T R Harihara Sharma, father of Sri Vikku Vinayakram. Very soon, she began playing mridangam for Carnatic music concerts. However, on discovering Sukkanya’s special passion for the ghatam, Sri Harihara Sharma fully encouraged her transition into the ghatam. With immense dedication, he guided her through this journey.Soon Sukkanya came under the tutelage of Sri Vikku Vinayakram. Over the last 40 years, under his guidance, Sukkanya has mastered the unique ghatam fingering techniques and is today regarded as one of the true torchbearers of the ‘Vikku baani’ of ghatam playing.

For a brief while, she also trained in the violin under Sri Gurumurthy, brother of Sri Vinayakaram and in vocal music under Sri Iyya Swami Iyer.Renowned ghatam player Sri K M Vaidyanathan has also played a key role in shaping her musical sensibilities.
